I’m so thrilled to introduce our newest interview series, Born2Blog! Our generation is filled with many talented bloggers & influencers, and this series is our way of recognizing the ones who are using their platforms to positively influence the world. Our very first interviewee, Sherisse’ Woodley, is a dear colleague of mine. She’s the founder of Deliberate Magazine, a digital and print publication that covers topics relevant to the millennial generation.
Sherisse’ and I go WAY back—well, sort of. We graduated from the same college. I’ve always known her to be a sweet, hardworking person with a go-getter attitude; but what stuck out to me the most was her love for the Lord. I recently got the chance to catch up with her about the amazing things she’s been doing.
Who is Sherisse’?
I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and raised in South Texas. I will always be a Texas gal, but I guess [you can say] I’m a Hoosier also. I moved to Los Angeles at 17 years old, with 2 large suitcases, to study fashion at FIDM/The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. I had always aspired to be in the fashion industry and, in a way, still do. I’m currently working on a new book, occasionally writing for my website’s online publication and quarterly e-zine. I also just got into screenwriting. I’ve been in LA for a little over five years now, and I’ve met some of the most genuinely amazing people.
At what point in your life did you realize you were born to blog?
I’ve always loved writing, but it wasn’t until my last year of college that I realized I wanted to turn it into career—not just something I did for fun. I’ve launched several blogs throughout the years, but conflicts with time and school hindered me from keeping them up. When I got laid off in 2015, I decided to start a new blog.
How did the idea for Deliberate Magazine come about?
It originally started as my personal blog, Faith, Glam & Coffee. I chose the name because those were the three things I really loved. In an effort to keep me busy and not go stir- crazy (or lose my drive), I started to upload articles about food, life, and fashion. From there, I began looking for writers and later changed the name to Deliberate Magazine. I wanted something that not only represented myself, but each writer who contributed to it as well.
What’s the meaning behind the name?
The definition for deliberate itself: intentional, purposeful, calculated, intended, willful, and knowing.
Our mission is to encourage individuals to live a deliberate lifestyle. Being alive does not necessarily mean that someone is living his or her life. One must have goals, aspirations, and drive in order to do so.
Are the magazine issues only viewable online? Or do you offer print copies as well?
About two or three months into launching the online publication, I thought to additionally offer an e-zine. We publish them quarterly, and they’re currently available to the public on Issuu (for free!). Those who prefer hard copies do have that option of purchasing them [on-demand].
Growing a publication takes A LOT of hard work, dedication, and patience. I know that firsthand! What keeps you going?
My contributors, readers, and passion for writing. I’ve received emails from my writers, expressing their gratitude for the platform I’ve made. Although I have guidelines and unpermitted topics, Deliberate Magazine is a flexible atmosphere where writers can cover topics that interest them, or really tug on their spirits. [It’s a place] where they truly have the freedom to express themselves from the heart.
In what way do you hope to influence your readers with Deliberate Magazine?
I hope that they leave more encouraged about life, and fired up to live deliberately. We, as humans, take life for granted. We just don’t know when our time will be up. If a reader can come to my site leaving inspired, or get that extra boost of faith they needed, I can go to sleep happy.
