Girls with Purpose: Emily B. Cummins, Founder of

It’s so amazing how God finds creative, unique ways to work in and through his people. In starting The Happy Joy, I have met some amazing people who share the same mission as I do, and that is to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to young women worldwide. Among these individuals include founder Emily Cummins. Born in Cleveland, OH, the 24-year-old has worked as a marketing & communications professional for numerous churches around the country since graduating from college, and still continues to do so. She also partners with churches and “Girl Bosses” full-time, to helping them accomplish their goals and reach their full potentials (in addition to heading

What’s the backstory of

Four years ago I decided to put permanent ink on my body. What I didn’t know — back in 2012 — was that those eight little letters inscribed on my wrist would become the anthem of my life, and spark something remarkable in those around me.

During the fall of 2014, I attended a “Writer’s Bootcamp” with Margaret Feinberg and Jonathan Merritt. One of the first challenges they posed to their trainees was simply this: “What’s your mission statement?” That’s a question I’ve been asked before and have tried countless times to define, but during that October the words came together like magic, in a way only God could orchestrate.

In what way has your relationship with God influenced the idea of

My battle cry is to invite women on the personal and courageous journey of becoming who God made them to be. That’s why I turn off my alarm clock and get out of bed each morning. That’s why I write. That’s why I dream. In becoming me, I see those around me becoming too, and can’t help but be inspired and encouraged on the journey.

And that’s what is all about, women that passionately pursue becoming who God made them to be. is an online resource and tool to encourage and empower women, invite women to share their stories, and provide a space for women to experience community together. Becoming has been interwoven into my blogging strategy since 2007 (long before my tattoo). This past year however, I’ve seen women around the world really begin to embrace “becoming” as more than just something I blog about, but a way of life for all of us since we truly are all becoming!

You’ve created this unbreakable bond with other young women as a result of starting Has this impacted your life in any way?

Absolutely! At the end of the day, I want to be the biggest cheerleader for women as they become who God destined them to be. As women share their “becoming” stories with myself and the community, I continue to learn, grow and become more of who God made me to be along the way. That’s the beauty of embracing this journey called life together. We sharpen each other, encourage each other, and discover that we’re not alone.

Do you ever have in-person meetups with your readers?

Yes, which has been very cool! A reader from Nashville once commented on one of my Instagram posts that she was flying to my city, and we ended up meeting for coffee.

What’s a typical day in the life of you?

Every day is a new adventure. Some days are filled to the brim with coffee and connecting with women to hear their becoming stories, other days are packed with writing, editing, graphic design, website updates, brainstorming, and team meetings. I’m always searching for fun ideas and relevant ways to connect with women. Simultaneously, I’m always interested in learning about what other organizations and communities are doing to encourage women to be who God made them to be. I love linking arms with women on the same mission! My days are also filled with client meetings and projects for my business.

Each series you come out with has a specific theme. Where do you get your inspiration?

I’ve always written about what I’m learning and what I need to grow in. I pray and talk to God about what women — including myself — need to learn and discover on our journeys, in addition to brainstorming with the Becoming team.

About how often do you publish a new series?

We launch a new series, new Spotify playlist (that goes along with the series), and 2 new “becoming” video stories every month.

Social media plays a huge role in the way information is communicated today. How has it helped you in spreading your message to the masses?

Social media is how [my team and I] connect with women around the world. is a [social media-based community]. In addition to our blog, we have Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages. We even utilize a social media platform to record our “becoming” video stories, called Zoom.

What do you love most about your role at

Partnering with women, hearing their stories, praying with them, encouraging them, and becoming who God made us to be together. It brings me so much joy to see women embracing who they are, Whose they are, and walking confidently on their “becoming” journeys. Being able to cheer women on is my all-time favorite!

It seems like you have a really great team! How did the formation of your team come about?

As I dreamed about what could be, I knew there would be tremendous value in bringing other women around me to share their stories and that in doing so, the impact could have would be so much bigger than if I were doing it on my own. I prayed and asked God to guide me to who He was shaping and molding to be on the Becoming team, and invited several women to link arms and join the team as God led me!

Where do you hope to see yourself and the state of in five years?

If I’m still able to partner with women and have the privilege of hearing/celebrating their “becoming” stories in 5 years, I’d be incredibly humbled, honored, and thankful.
