So, my boyfriend and I almost got scammed into joining a pyramid scheme last month. But I’m SO grateful for the spirit of discernment!
Ever heard of Amway? Me too. I actually learned about them years ago with caution to steer clear of their dealings. Funny thing is, I never in a million years thought that I’d be targeted by one of their reps years later.
To be fair, we didn’t realize that the mentors we were approached by were just Amway reps in disguise, until a month after we started meeting with them. They posed themselves as financially free people using their new-found free time to plant seeds into others. I just knew that the things they were saying sounded too good to be true from the beginning, but instead of listening to our guts, we persisted out of curiosity.
We didn’t get hit with the big Amway bombshell until we were four or five meetings in. Right after convincing ourselves that these people were just trying to mentor us out of the goodness of their hearts, with no strings attached, we eventually got hit with the shameless catch: an Amway membership with a ridiculous commitment requiring thousands of dollars per year, just to use the Amway system, attend mandatory monthly and annual seminars, and buy several books and materials for required reading and listening. The crazy part? Most people who fall into the trap end up getting the short end of the stick.
Don’t get me wrong: financial freedom IS attainable! The kind of financial freedom our potential mentors were promoting sounded like candy to the ears, however, and far from biblically sound. Don’t think for a second that these Amway reps aren’t getting a cut for the people they recruit. If you haven’t realized it by now, the pyramid is their source of their financial freedom. What’s so sad is the fact that many Christians are being targeted by these moochers to fatten their own pockets, and I just don’t think that’s right.
Everything that glitters ain’t gold. Stay aware of that fact that these reps lurk around malls, coffee shops, and many other common areas to lure vulnerable people in. If you ever get approached with an opportunity that sounds too good to be true, whether it be through Amway or another get rich quick scheme, pray about it before making the decision to move forward.
